CIVICUS and ANND Fellowship
BACKGROUND CIVICUS is a global alliance of civil society organisations and activists dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society around the world. We strive to amplify marginalised voices, especially from the Global South, and have members in more than 170 countries. Since 1993, we have been dedicated to enhancing the rights, freedoms and vitality of civil society as a whole. We are also a global team, using new technologies to connect us around the world. We work for civil society, protecting and growing `civic space’ – the freedoms of expression, association and assembly - that allow citizens and organisations to speak out, organise and take action. We monitor, research and analyse global events and trends that impact civil society. We strengthen civil society by bringing it together to generate and share knowledge, to improve its working and to act collectively. We work to ensure that civil society voices are heard. To achieve impact we communicate, campaign and advocate. The Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND) The Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND) is a regional network, working in 12 Arab countries with nine national networks and 23 NGO members. ANND aims to strengthen the role of civil society, enhancing the values of democracy, respect of human rights and sustainable development in the region. ANND advocates for more sound and effective socio-economic reforms in the region, which integrate the concepts of sustainable development, gender justice, and the rights-based approach. The network programs cover three main areas: Development Policies in the region Social and economic reform agendas and the role of international and regional organizations. Economic and trade liberalization policies and its social and economic implications BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF JOB PURPOSE: CIVICUS’ Fellows Programme is an exciting new venture in which professionals are placed with CIVICUS national/regional member organisations for a period of 2 years. During this round, one fellow will be placed with The Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND), based in Beirut, Lebanon. The primary aim of the programme is to promote knowledge exchange and learning, and build the capacity of both the host organisation and their members. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: At least 3 - 5 years of work experience in research in social and economic studies focusing on the civil society sector Demonstrated commitment to civil society and citizen action Demonstrated or proven experience with research/training/institutional strengthening Demonstrated work experience within the MENA region; applicants from MENA are strongly encouraged to apply Written and verbal fluency in Arabic and English, working knowledge of French is an asset KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES: Knowledge of global/regional dynamics and civil society issues, particularly in the MENA region Understanding of membership and networking principles Proven ability to teamwork, problem solve within a team, and adapt to different situations Cross cultural awareness and sensitivity Willingness to travel KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ROLE 1. Support the delivery and implementation of ANND’s strategic priorities 2. Strengthen institutional capacity of ANND 3. Promote knowledge exchange and learning between ANND and their members, and between CIVICUS, CIVICUS members, and ANND MAIN ACTIVITIES OF THIS ROLE Support the delivery of ANND’s key strategic objectives (80%) Contribute to capacity building, monitoring, research and advocacy related activities to strengthen ANND’s national and regional platforms. Contribute to ANND’s Action Plan to support, where relevant, ANND’s regional and national programmes Develop membership engagement tools and approaches. Represent ANND at conferences, events and meetings with partners when required. Contribute to developing communication strategy and member engagement calendar Knowledge Exchange and Learning (20%) Contribute knowledge and research to both CIVICUS and ANND´s member networks Support regional coordination and network building of CIVICUS and ANND members Share knowledge and experience through CIVICUS social media, OpEds, and other publications, in collaboration with the communication team and AGNA Coordination team Location: Beirut, Lebanon Start date: anticipated to be beginning of July 2018, with a 2-week induction in Johannesburg, South Africa Duration: 24 months Salary: Gross US$ 38340 annually To apply please submit (in English or Arabic): A motivational letter answering the below questions (200 words max for each question) Please describe your experience working or living in a developing country or marginalized community, including where you were and what you did (professionally, academically or personally).
