Climate Justice Working Group

The Climate Justice Working Group at ANND is a collaborative platform that brings together civil society representatives, experts, and activists working on climate and climate justice across the Arab region. Through dialogue and knowledge exchange, the Climate Justice Working Group seeks to deepen understanding of the political, economic, and social dimensions of climate change and environmental degradation, and to explore strategies for addressing these challenges within the broader framework of sustainable human development. The group’s work involves identifying regional priorities, formulating shared civil society positions, and contributing to the development of social dialogue mechanisms that can shape national and regional climate strategies. It also strives to articulate the role of civil society in global climate negotiations—most notably the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP)—and to issue policy recommendations rooted in the principles of climate justice and sustainable development.

The group operates within a framework of core principles, including common but differentiated responsibilities, recognition of the historical accountability of industrialized nations for emissions, and the need to revise prevailing patterns of production and consumption. It critically interrogates the dominant neoliberal model and its role in perpetuating environmental and climate crises, while promoting a rights-based approach —one that affirms gender equity, social justice, colonial histories and the lived realities of the most affected communities.
