Webinar: Gender-Based Violence against Women and Girls: New Horizons and Emerging Issues
The Women’s Rights Working Group at the Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND) organized a dialogue session with Reem Alsalem, the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls, on Wednesday, October 22, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Beirut time.
The session addressed the Special Rapporteur’s latest report, “Gender-Based Violence against Women and Girls: New Perspectives and Emerging Issues,” which offers a critique of the prevailing global feminist discourse and presents an analytical approach that transcends traditional gender frameworks, focusing on emerging issues and the intersecting challenges facing women and girls in diverse contexts.
The meeting provided an in-depth analytical reading of the report and opened an interactive discussion on ways to develop more liberated and contextualized feminist discourse and practices that enhance the effectiveness of efforts to combat gender-based violence, taking into account the social, political, and cultural specificities of the Arab region.
The following individuals participated in the seminar:
Reem Alsalem – UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls
Salma Al-Nims – Women’s Rights Activist
Jihan Abu Zeid – Coordinator of the Women’s Rights Working Group at the Network
The session was moderated by Adeeb Nehme from the Arab NGO Network for Development.
This seminar is part of the Network’s and the Women’s Rights Working Group’s efforts to promote critical discussion of prevailing global narratives and to develop more equitable and inclusive feminist rights approaches that address the challenges on the ground and support the struggles of women and girls in the Arab region.
