Strengthening Inclusive Civil Society Action in the Arab Region Towards Achieving Climate Justice

A regional initiative supporting inclusive civil society participation, collective learning, knowledge generation and evidence-based advocacy to advance climate justice in the Arab region.

Countries: Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia and Egypt
Implemented by: Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND), with national focal points in Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia
National Focal Points: New Woman Foundation (Egypt), Phenix Center (Jordan), Tunisian Democratic Women Association (Tunisia)

About the Project

The project “Strengthening Inclusive Civil Society Action in the Arab Region Towards Achieving Climate Justice” aims to strengthen the engagement of civil society actors in advancing climate justice across Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia and Egypt. It seeks to support inclusive participation, strengthen the ownership of climate justice priorities by civil society, and promote evidence-based advocacy for alternative policies that respond to national and local realities.

At the heart of the initiative is a Community of Practice (CoP) approach that brings together civil society organizations, activists, experts and groups whose perspectives are often underrepresented in climate policymaking. Particular attention is given to the participation of women, young people and marginalized communities.

Through national focus group discussions, collaborative learning, case studies, webinars, knowledge-generation activities and regional advocacy, the project connects experiences from the four countries with wider discussions on climate policies and international processes.

The initiative is structured around three interconnected areas of work: increasing collective learning on climate justice, strengthening knowledge mobilization for inclusive civil society engagement, and expanding advocacy at regional and international levels.

Project Objectives

The project works to:

  • Strengthen collective learning and exchange on climate justice among civil society actors in the four target countries.
  • Promote meaningful participation by women, youth and groups at risk of being left behind.
  • Generate and mobilize knowledge grounded in local experiences and national priorities.
  • Support evidence-based advocacy and citizen-led engagement in climate policymaking.
  • Connect national and regional civil society priorities with international climate and development policy processes.

Research, Knowledge and Project Outputs

This page brings together the knowledge products and resources developed through the project, including findings from national consultations, case studies, webinars and advocacy-related materials. Resources will be added as they become available.

Focus Group Discussions: Outcome Reports

As part of the project's participatory approach, national focus group discussions bring together civil society representatives, particularly women, young people and groups often underrepresented in climate policymaking. The discussions identify national climate justice priorities, document local experiences and contribute to collective learning and evidence-based advocacy.

National Case Studies

The project foresees the development of four national case studies informed by priorities identified through the Community of Practice. These studies will explore relevant climate justice challenges and experiences in the target countries, contributing to collective learning and providing evidence for civil society advocacy.

National case studies will be published here as they become available.

Webinars and Knowledge Exchange

Webinars and knowledge-exchange activities provide opportunities to share findings, bring together national and regional perspectives, and encourage dialogue among civil society actors and climate justice experts.

The project includes national webinars linked to focus group discussions, as well as advocacy webinars addressing broader regional priorities and opportunities for engagement.

Webinar recordings, summaries, presentations and related resources will be added to this section.

Knowledge Mobilization and Community of Practice

The Community of Practice serves as a space for ongoing dialogue, exchange and collaborative learning. It supports the identification of shared priorities while ensuring that national experiences and the perspectives of women, youth and marginalized groups inform regional climate justice discussions.

The project also envisages a regional opinion poll to explore differences in climate justice awareness and understanding and provide further opportunities for underrepresented groups to express their concerns.

Regional Advocacy and International Engagement

The project seeks to connect evidence and priorities emerging from national and regional activities with international policy discussions. Its advocacy component includes regional dialogue, knowledge exchange and engagement with multilateral processes.

These efforts include engagement with the United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COP) and the International Conference on Financing for Development, with the aim of strengthening the visibility of Arab civil society perspectives in global debates.

This page will be updated as additional research, case studies, webinar materials and advocacy resources are published through the project.
